Seasons of Life

A few months ago, I went back East to visit one of my dearest friends and former college roommate from Syracuse University. She had an 8 week old son, whom I met for the first time. I’ve known Lorin for 16 years (man, I feel old saying that!) and one of the best parts of our friendship is seeing how her life has evolved and changed – from each season of life.

I stood next to her at her wedding as her maid of honor back in 2006 and I had just started learning photography.  So I was snapping photos like a madwoman during the wedding and probably driving her wedding photographer crazy! Little did I know, that is probably one of — if not THE most annoying things wedding photographers have to deal with.. wedding guests with their DSLRs getting in the way of a good photo. (I know better now — let the professionals do their job!) Anyway, back to the story: during the course of the wedding, I took pictures of everything. And during their first dance, I captured this photo (below, left). Out of all the photos from their wedding, it’s one of their very favorites. In fact, she just asked to get an 8×10 print to put on her wall of their new home. I am so honored. It just goes to prove you don’t need a fancy, expensive camera to catch a beautiful moment. I was shooting with the Nikon D50 and the 50mm 1.4.

Fast forward 3 years and I had the opportunity to take her son’s first professional photos.

I love the juxtaposition of these two photos…the two most life-changing moments for them — getting married and having a baby.  I look forward to seeing her enjoy this season of life and I can only hope to capture more special moments for them in the future.
